Hiking Backpacks

If you are planning to go hiking on a regular basis, you are going to want to invest in a suitable backpack. As with other hiking gear, there are many different types available, starting from smaller daypacks, and ranging up to larger, 80 litre packs more suited to multi day extended trips. The key considerations to keep in mind when choosing one, are its carrying capacity and its level of comfort.

Many people worry about buying a backpack that is big enough for their hiking needs, but the opposite is often true. They end up buying one that is too big, and just end up carrying around something that contains a lot of empty space and is heavier than they need! Working out the items of hiking gear you are likely to carry with you when hiking is the first step in determining what type of backpack is required.

Daypacks can carry anything between 5 and 30 litres, and are small and light. Their smaller profile means that they can carry the essentials such as water, snacks, a hiking GPS, and a rain jacket. This type of pack would have no internal support, and no waist belt. As packs become larger, they have more compartments, have a system to keep them rigid and provide comfort, and offer a waist belt to distribute the load more evenly on the body. The largest backpacks will enable you to carry spare clothes, camping gear, stove and food.

Hiking backpacks are ideal for – Carrying the gear you need for any particular hike. It’s important to remember not to overpack, but at the same time, take everything you need.
